Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

A Special Enrollment Period allows individuals to enroll in health insurance outside the annual Open Enrollment Period, provided they have experienced certain QUALIFYING LIFE EVENTS such as losing health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, adopting a child, or having a household income below a certain threshold. The enrollment period may vary depending on the type of event, with a 60-day window before or after the event to enroll in a plan. Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are available for enrollment at any time. Additionally, job-based plans are required to offer a Special Enrollment Period of at least 30 days.
